THE FOUNDING MOTHERS by Cokie Roberts

Much has been written about our “Founding Fathers,” the men who signed the Declaration of Independence, battled the British during the Revolutionary War and wrote the Constitution of the United States. While the “Founding Fathers,” were away from home, who was taking care of their families, businesses, farms and plantations? It was their women, the “Founding Mothers” who kept the home fires alive and supported the men. Roberts uses personal correspondence, private journals and favored recipes to reveal surprising stories and the everyday trials and triumphs of these women.

MARCH 9

THE SOURCE by James Michener

Michener first published his fictional historical novel in 1965. The story begins with an archaeological dig at the Tell, or a mound, at Makor in the modern state of Israel. Michener uses the uncovered artifacts from each layer as a basis for creating a picture of the people associated with that artifact, revealing their colorful history from the prehistoric period to the creation of the current state of Israel. It is the story of the Holy Land, the development of religious ideas that help shaped western civilization as well as the conquerors and conflicts that still affect our world today.

APRIL 13

CHRIST THE LORD: OUT OF EGYPT by Anne Rice

This is a fictional account of the Life of Jesus at the age of 7 and 8. The books of Matthew and Luke tell of His birth and subsequent flight to Egypt and return to Israel upon the death of King Herod. Little is know of Jesus’ childhood, but the author take great liberties to tell the story from Jesus’ viewpoint. Rice colors her novel with authentic historical and cultural details. The strength of the book weighs on the author’s ability to make Jesus believable as both a child and the son of God.
